Yuexiu Park

Yuexiu Park, originally named Yuexiu Hill, is the largest park in Guangzhou City with an area of 920,000 square meters. Inside the park, there are luxuriant trees and colorful flowers. Every year, the Spring Festival Flower Fair is hold here when the festival is approaching, besides the there is Chrysanthemum Exhibition in autumn. In the park, visitors can find a large stadium, which can hold more than 30,000 audiences, the Stone Sculpture of Five Rams which is the symbol of Guangzhou City, Zhenhai Tower, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the ancient city walls built in the Ming Dynasty.

Highlights to See in the Park

Yuexiu Park is a park of mountains. The park consists of g 7 hills of Yuexiu Mountain, Muke Hill, Changyao Hill, Liyutou Hill and Sweet Osmanthus Hill and 3 manual work lakes of Dongxiu Lake, Nanxiu Lake and Beixiu Lake. Dongxiu and Nanxiu Lake boasting wonderful sceneries are ideal places for painting, sketch, and fishing. And there are adventure playground, barbeque and gymnasium, etc. In addition, tourists can see all kinds of Chinese agricultures such as towers, pavilions, lofts and water pavilions and five-floored buildings and Zhenhai Tower and Five Rams Stone Sculpture.

 

History of Yuexiu park

Yuexiu Park, rooted in the historical context of Guangzhou, has a timeline spanning centuries, closely intertwined with the city’s evolution.

Its origin traces back to ancient times, with its location—Yuexiu Mountain, a spur of Baiyun Mountain—playing a significant role in local history. During the Western Han Dynasty, Zhao Tuo, the Nanyue King, reportedly held grand banquets for his officials on Yuexiu Mountain, marking the mountain’s early connection to political and social activities. Later, in the Southern Han Dynasty, the mountain became a royal recreational spot, with the Yuewang Terrace built here as a venue for imperial banquets and outings.

The modern transformation of Yuexiu Mountain into a public park began in the early 20th century. In 1921, Sun Yat-sen, the great democratic revolutionary, issued an order to convert Yuexiu Mountain into a public park, aiming to provide a leisure space for citizens. This vision was realized in 1926 when the park officially opened to the public, though it was initially managed on a small scale.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the park underwent systematic development and expansion. In 1957, Yuexiu Park was formally established as an integrated municipal park, incorporating surrounding scenic spots and green spaces. Over the following decades, it was continuously renovated and upgraded—historical relics like Zhenhai Tower and the Ming Dynasty City Wall were restored, and new facilities were added to enhance its function as a public recreation and cultural site. Today, as a national key park and a 4A-level tourist attraction, Yuexiu Park stands as a living witness to Guangzhou’s historical changes, blending natural scenery with profound cultural heritage.

Zhenhai Tower - Zhenhai Tower, also known as the Five - Storey Building, is located on the top of Yuexiu Mountain. Built in 1380, it is an ancient building with strong Lingnan characteristics. The building is 28 meters high, with five storeys. The first and second floors are made of red sandstone, and the upper floors are of blue bricks. It has been rebuilt several times in history. Now it is a key national cultural relic protection unit and also serves as the exhibition hall of the Guangzhou Museum.

Five Rams Stone Sculpture - The Five Goats Statue is one of the most famous landmarks in Guangzhou. Located on Yuexiu Mountain, it was created in 1959 by sculptors Yin Jichang and others. The statue depicts five goats, symbolizing good luck and prosperity in Chinese culture. According to legend, five immortals rode five goats to Guangzhou, bringing rice and blessings. The goats then turned into stone, and this statue has since become a symbol of the city.

Guangzhou Museum of Art - stands at Muke hillock of the park. It was built in 1959 and considered as the symbol of Guangzhou and Guangzhou has a name of Goat City. It is stuffed full of fine examples of Chinese painting and calligraphy; inkstones; giltwood and china and lots, lots more.
 

Guangzhou City Wall in the Ming Dynasty - The Guangzhou City Wall in the Ming Dynasty in Yuexiu Park is the only existing ancient city wall in Guangzhou. Built in the early Ming Dynasty, it is one of the three cultural relics of that era. The total length of the wall is 1,137 meters. The lower part of the wall is built with red sandstone strips, and the upper part is made of blue bricks. Some old trees grow out of the wall, and their roots wrap around the wall, which is a unique sight. It is a witness to the history of Guangzhou.

Sun Yat - sen Monument  - Sun Yat - sen Monument is situated in the southernmost part of Yuexiu Mountain's main hill. It was built in 1929 in memory of Sun Yat - sen, a great democratic revolutionary. The monument is 37 meters high and has a square shape with a pointed tip. There are 26 ram sculptures around the base, implying the "City of the Five Rams". In front of the monument is a marble engraving Sun Yat - sen's testament, showing his devotion to China.
 

How to get to Yuexiu Park

1. Metro (Most Recommended)

The metro is the fastest and most hassle-free way to reach Yuexiu Park, with direct access to the park’s entrance.

• Line and Station: Take Metro Line 2 and get off at Yuexiu Park Station (Exit B1).
• Walking Distance: Once you exit from B1, turn right and walk for about 2–3 minutes. You will see the main entrance of the park on your left.
• Note: Metro trains run from approximately 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM daily. You can buy a single-trip ticket at the station or use a Guangzhou Metro Card for easier transfers.
   

2. Bus

Multiple bus routes stop near Yuexiu Park, suitable if you want to enjoy street views along the way.

• Key Bus Stops and Routes:
  • Yuexiu Park Station (Main Gate): Served by buses No. 2, 10, 33, 55, 66, 76, 180, 215, 233, 297, and B2.
  • Yuexiu Mountain South Gate Station: Served by buses No. 5, 21, 58, 87, 101, 103, 105, and 108.
• Walking Tip: After getting off the bus, follow the road signs to “Yuexiu Park” — the walk usually takes 5–8 minutes, depending on the stop.
   

3. Taxi/Ride-Hailing (Most Convenient for Groups)

Taxis or ride-hailing apps (like Didi) are ideal if you’re traveling with luggage or a group.

• Destination Input: Tell the driver or enter “Yuexiu Park Main Entrance (解放北路 960 号)” in the app.
• Cost Reference: From Guangzhou Railway Station, the fare is about 15–20 RMB; from Guangzhou South Railway Station, it’s around 80–100 RMB (depending on traffic).
• Note: Confirm the entrance with the driver in advance, as the park has multiple gates.
   

4. Walking (For Nearby Visitors)

If you’re staying near areas like Beijing Road Pedestrian Street or Zhongshan Memorial Hall, walking is a good option.

• Route Example: From Zhongshan Memorial Hall, walk north along Jiefang North Road for about 10 minutes (around 800 meters) to reach the park’s south gate.
