I. Founding

The Visionary: Tan Kah Kee

Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, a renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader. At a time when China was mired in poverty and weakness, Tan firmly believed that “education is the foundation of a nation.” He resolved to invest his personal fortune in establishing an institution in his hometown to cultivate talent and revitalize China.
 

Most movingly, during the global economic crisis of the 1930s and despite facing difficulties in his own business ventures, Tan decided, “I would rather sell my assets than let Xiamen University fail.” He sold three of his buildings and poured all proceeds into the university. This declaration became the ultimate testament to his spirit of selfless dedication—sacrificing his personal wealth for the sake of education.
 

II. Adversity and Perseverance

When the full-scale War of Resistance Against Japan erupted in 1937, Xiamen University was forced to relocate to the mountain town of Changting in western Fujian. Under extreme hardship, President Sa Bendong led faculty and students through arduous conditions, steadfastly continuing teaching and research with remarkable achievements.
