Shiquan Street is located in the hotel area in the old downtown of Suzhou. Shiquan Street
Both sides of Shiquan Street are lined with typical Su-style buildings characterized by whitewashed walls and dark gray tiles. Most of the buildings are two to three stories high, with neat and concise gabled black eaves, black roof tiles, and black lintels. The wooden lattice windows and wooden lattice air conditioning external frames exude an elegant and stable charm. When combined with the white walls, they form a freehand aesthetic like that of ink wash paintings, perfectly embodying the unique style of Jiangnan architecture.
The tranquil Shiquan River flows gently between the two banks of the street. Elements such as stone bridges, stone railings, green trees, and ancient wells set off each other, composing poetic pictures of a Jiangnan water town. Leisure facilities such as green belts, pavilions, and verandas along the river provide pedestrians with places to rest and enjoy the scenery. Rather than large-scale demolition, the renewal encouraged shop-owner-led upgrades, guided by government planning and supported by market participation. This multi-party governance model has turned Shiquan Street into a model example of how historic districts in Suzhou can be preserved, revitalized, and adapted to modern urban life without losing their original charm.
Western Section (Renmin Road → Phoenix Street)
Shiquan 526 Park: Located inside the CNNC 526 Digital Culture Industrial Park, this trendy area features plush-decorated columns, Suzhou-style background walls, and colorful rainbow stairs—perfect for photography and social media check-ins.
Qianji Beef Pastry (乾记牛肉饼): A well-known local snack shop famous for its fragrant beef pastries. Pair one with lotus-flavored drinks for an authentic Shiquan Street food experience.

Plane Tree Decoration Area: In winter, the street’s plane trees are dressed in “knitted coats” with playful Chinese blessings or transformed into giant floral installations, adding warmth and romance to the season.
Eastern Section (Wuqiao Road → Fengmen Bridge)
Xingzao Bridge (星造桥): Originally built in the early Ming Dynasty, the bridge is said to be named after a meteorite fell nearby. Its fine carvings and long history make it a cultural landmark of Shiquan Street.
Wuyachang (吴衙场): Once the residence of Wu Zhijia, a Ming Dynasty official. The lane still preserves an ancient red bean tree and offers a glimpse into Suzhou’s historical residential life.
Que Garden (阙园): Formerly the residence of Li Genyuan, remnants such as an old well and trees planted by hand remain today. Though parts of the garden have merged into residential areas, visitors can still sense the elegance of Republican-era garden aesthetics.
Shiquan Street is close to several hotels, including Nanyuan Hotel, Suzhou Hotel, and Nanlin Hotel, and it is also within walking distance of the famous Master-of-Nets Garden, one of Suzhou’s most celebrated classical gardens and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Therefore, it is a one stop street for shopping, accommodation, dining, and relax.
