Victoria Peak

Victoria Peak, also known as The Peak by local residents, is the highest hill in Hong Kong Island, with an altitude of 554 meters. Located in the northwest of Hong Kong Island, the peak has been the landmark of HK for many years. It is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Hong Kong, as well as the most prestigious luxury housing area in the city with beautiful natural landscape.

On the top of the Peak, there is a platform where you can see overlook the attractive view of Hong Kong Island and Victoria Harbor, which is extremely beautiful, especially at night. The Lion Pavilion, The Peak Tower and the Peak Square near to the upper terminal of the Peak tram are all perfect viewing platform to enjoy the overlooks. 
 

The Development History of Victoria Peak

In the mid-19th century, Victoria Peak was chosen by British colonists arriving in Hong Kong as a summer residential area due to its cool climate. Its English name “Victoria Peak,” derived from Queen Victoria, marked the colonial imprint. In 1888, Asia's first funicular railway—the Peak Tram—began operation, significantly improving accessibility. Concurrently, the British colonial government implemented policies like the Peak District Preservation Ordinance, effectively restricting non-Europeans from residing there. This transformed the Peak into a physical symbol of colonial privilege and racial segregation, a status that persisted until the mid-20th century.
 

Development at Victoria Peak abruptly halted during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong from 1941 to 1945. Many buildings were seized or damaged by Japanese forces, and the Peak Tram ceased operations. This marked a brief yet traumatic chapter in the Peak's history, requiring gradual post-war reconstruction of its community and facilities.
 

Following World War II, societal shifts gradually eroded the Peak's exclusivity. Beginning in the 1970s, its identity rapidly evolved from an elite residential enclave into a premier tourist destination. Iconic landmarks like the Peak Tower (originally built in 1972 and rebuilt in 1997) and Peak Galleria (completed in the 1990s) emerged, featuring observation decks, shops, and restaurants. Its world-renowned night views overlooking Victoria Harbour cemented its transformation into Hong Kong's premier tourist destination, attracting visitors from across the globe.

【The Sky Terrace 428】

This is the highest observation deck on Victoria Peak, at an altitude of 428 meters, offering a 360-degree unobstructed view. Standing here, you can take in the vibrant cityscape of Hong Kong Island, Victoria Harbour, and the Kowloon Peninsula, especially the world-famous night view of Victoria Harbour. It's recommended to arrive before sunset to witness the magnificent transformation from the setting sun to the city lights coming on. This is the absolute must-visit spot for taking photos; although an entrance fee is required, its unparalleled views make it a top choice for first-time visitors.

【The Peak Plaza Observation Deck】

a free observation deck located on the top floor of The Peak Plaza, offers another excellent option for enjoying the Hong Kong skyline. Its views are more focused on the western part of Hong Kong Island and the lush green mountains, creating a relatively open and tranquil atmosphere. The plaza is home to numerous restaurants, cafes, and specialty shops, allowing you to easily combine sightseeing with dining and shopping. For visitors looking to save money or avoid the crowds at The Peak Tower, this is a comfortable and affordable excellent vantage point.

【The Peak Tram】

Opened in 1888, the Peak Tram is one of the oldest and most famous funicular railways in the world; since the opening of the Peak Tramway, the popularity of The Peak has continued to grow. The tram rises to 396 meters (about 1,300 feet) above sea level. It runs so steeply that the buildings you pass look like they are leaning a gradient of between 4 to 27 degrees! Riding The Peak Tram is the quickest and most scenic way to arrive at The Peak. Whether you are going up or coming down, you will love this trip.

The Tram ride alone is spectacularly breathtaking, whether you are going up or coming down. This will give you the best angle to capture exceptional video footage while you are moving to the 373 meters hill top. The tram is about 1.4 kilometers from the lower station to the upper station, which takes about 8 minutes running. At the end of this eight-minute journey you can expect to have the penultimate view of the entire Hong Kong. Getting to the Peak by the Peak Tram is an unforgettable experience.

The Peak Tram Lower Terminus is easily reachable by foot from the MTR in Central or by public transportation. If you are to take the rising Peak Tram, remember to sit on the side where you get on; if you are to take the descending tram, remember to take sit on the opposite side where you get on, so that you can have a better overlook of the Victoria Harbor.


【The Peak Tram Historical Gallery】

The Peak Tram Historical Gallery was opened in September, 2007. The gallery is like a time tunnel with more than 200 memorabilia exhibited. It is divided into 15 theme sections; they will take you back to Hong Kong in the 19th and 20th century. In addition, it showcases the works of the city's talented artists.


【The Peak Park】

 converted from the gardens of the former Governor's Villa on The Peak, is a tranquil oasis hidden atop the mountain. The park exudes classic English charm, featuring expansive lawns, Victorian pavilions, and fountains. Away from the hustle and bustle of the main viewpoints, it's an ideal spot for picnics, walks, and relaxation, making it a favorite among locals. Here, you can experience a serene side of Hong Kong beyond its glitz and glamour, perfect for a break after visiting the main attractions.
 

【 Lugard Road Hiking Trail】

This is a gentle, open-air hiking trail, approximately 1.5 kilometers long, and is hailed as one of the "world's best urban hiking trails." Shaded by lush trees, the trail's outer edges offer unobstructed views, providing breathtaking panoramic vistas of Victoria Harbour and skyscrapers. The hike takes about an hour and allows you to discover the beauty of Hong Kong's urban landscape and nature from different perspectives. It is recommended to hike in the morning or afternoon when the light is soft and ideal for photography. There are no shops along the trail; please bring your own drinking water.
