Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Shangri-la
You can pick any bus passing by from Kunming, Lijiang and Dali, and ask to get off at Hutiaoxia County（虎跳峡镇）. There are four or five buses every day and it departs from Shangri-la long-distance Bus Station（香格里拉汽车客运站） (located at Zhongxiang Rd. Shangri-la County). The journey takes about 3 hours from Shangri-la to Hutiaoxia County, which is the middle range Tiger Leap Gorge located at. There is one bus from shangri-la bus station to Tiger leapping gorge every day, it departs at 07:30,ticket fare cost 44 CNY.
Tiger Leaping Gorge is generally divided into three sections: Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge.
Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge is the most developed and easiest part to visit. It is also the most popular among general tourists. Wooden walkways and stone steps lead visitors down toward the river, where the Jinsha River rushes through the narrow gorge with tremendous force. This section does not require hiking experience and is suitable for travelers with limited time, families, or those who prefer sightseeing rather than trekking.
Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge is considered the most spectacular and adventurous section. It offers closer views of the river and steeper cliffs, but reaching the best viewpoints requires a longer descent and ascent, which can be physically demanding. This section is more suitable for travelers in good physical condition who are looking for a more thrilling experience and dramatic scenery.
Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge is less visited and more remote. The landscape here is wilder and quieter, making it attractive to experienced hikers who prefer off-the-beaten-path routes. Facilities are limited, and the trails are less developed, so it is not recommended for first-time visitors or casual travelers.
Half-Day Trip from Shangri-La
Depart Shangri-La early in the morning and travel by private car or bus to Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge. Spend about 2–3 hours exploring the scenic area and enjoying the dramatic river views. Return to Shangri-La in the afternoon. This option is ideal for travelers with limited time.
One-Day Visit with Light Hiking
Travel from Shangri-La to Tiger Leaping Gorge in the morning. Visit Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge and, if time and physical condition allow, continue to Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge for a short hike. Return to Shangri-La or continue onward to Lijiang in the evening.
Tiger Leaping Gorge as a Stop between Lijiang and Shangri-La
Many travelers choose to visit Tiger Leaping Gorge while traveling between Lijiang and Shangri-La. After exploring the gorge, you can continue your journey without backtracking, making it an efficient and popular travel route.
- Clothing: The temperature difference in the gorge is large, so it is recommended to wear layered clothing (e.g., a T-shirt, a thin jacket, and a down jacket or thick coat for cold weather). Hiking shoes with non-slip soles are a must, as the trails are steep and may be slippery.
- Supplies: Bring enough water (at least 2 liters per person per day) and snacks (such as chocolate, energy bars, and dried fruits) to supplement energy during hiking. It is also recommended to bring sunscreen, a sun hat, sunglasses, a raincoat (for rainy season), and a first-aid kit (with band-aids, antiseptic, and painkillers).
- Altitude Sickness: The altitude of Tiger Leaping Gorge ranges from 1,800 meters to 3,000 meters. Some people may experience mild altitude sickness (such as headache, dizziness, and shortness of breath). It is recommended to rest more, avoid strenuous exercise when first arriving, and drink more water. You can also prepare some altitude sickness medicine in advance (such as Hongjingtian).
- Safety: Follow the signs and the guide's instructions when hiking. Do not leave the trail or go to dangerous areas (such as the edge of the cliff or the riverbank with strong currents). In case of bad weather (such as heavy rain or strong wind), stop hiking immediately and find a safe place to take shelter.
- Etiquette: Respect the local customs and traditions, especially when visiting Tibetan areas. Do not take photos of local people without their permission, and do not touch religious relics at will.
