Luoyang Climate & Weather

Luoyang is one of China’s six ancient capitals with a history of over 5,000 years. Its climate is shaped by its unique location in the Central Plains. To the north, Mangling Mountain blocks cold northern winds; to the south, Songshan Mountain (where the famous Shaolin Temple is located) helps regulate warm and humid air. Situated in the North Temperate Zone, Luoyang has a typical continental monsoon climate with four clear seasons. The average annual temperature is 14.2°C, and the annual rainfall averages 546mm. Most rain (over 60%) falls in June, July and August—this is due to the East Asian monsoon bringing moist air from the Pacific Ocean.

Characters of the four seasons in Luoyang

* Early Spring may have a period of dust storms while the late Spring may be pleasant
* a hot and humid Summer
* Autumn enjoys sunny days with modest temperatures
* a cold Winter with a black frost period can last 217 days

Spring (March to May): Unstable Early, Pleasant Late
Spring in Luoyang has big changes. Early spring (March to early April): Cold air from the north and dry winds often cause short dust storms, but clear skies usually follow. Late spring (mid-April to May): It gets much nicer—winter cold fades, and the air is fresh and mild (temperatures range from 9.7°C (49.5°F) to 27.9°C (82.2°F)). This is when Luoyang’s famous peonies bloom fully, covering the city with colors.

Summer (June to August): Hot, Humid and Rainy

Summer here is hot and damp, thanks to warm, moist monsoon air. July is the hottest month, with an average high of 32.6°C (90.7°F) and a low of 23.3°C (73.9°F)—nights can be stuffy. Summer gets the most rain: July alone has 141.5mm (nearly a quarter of the annual total). Afternoon thunderstorms are common; they cool things down temporarily and make the air fresh. If you don’t like the heat, head to mountain areas like Songshan or Laojun Mountain—they’re cooler and greener.

Autumn (September to November): The Best Season for Travel

Autumn is another great time to visit Luoyang. The weather is dry, sunny and mild—no more summer humidity. Temperatures drop from 26.9°C (80.4°F) in September to 14.2°C (57.6°F) in November, perfect for outdoor activities. Key highlights: Mountains and parks have beautiful autumn leaves (maples turn red, ginkgoes turn gold), and there are chrysanthemum shows across the city in October-November, showcasing different types of chrysanthemums.

Winter (December to February): Cold and Dry

Winter in Luoyang is cold and dry. January is the coldest month, with an average low of -4.1°C (24.6°F). The city has a long frost period (up to 217 days a year, when temperatures stay below freezing). Snow is rare (less than 20mm a year), but when it snows, historic sites like Longmen Grottoes and White Horse Temple look beautiful covered in light snow. Northern winds are strong in winter, so locals usually stay indoors and eat warm food to keep cozy.

Best Time to Visit (with Peony & Chrysanthemum Tips)

The best times to visit are April-May (spring) and September-November (autumn)—the weather is most comfortable.

Spring (Peony Fair): The annual Luoyang Peony Fair runs from April to early May, drawing millions of visitors. Key gardens to see peonies: Luoyang National Peony Garden, Wangcheng Park, Sui and Tang Luoyang City Ruins Park. Popular peony types: "Luoyang Red" and "Yao Huang". Tips for foreign visitors: Buy tickets online in advance (many gardens have English ticketing pages). Go early in the morning (8-10 AM) to avoid crowds and heat.

Autumn (Mountain & Chrysanthemum): Temperatures are 10°C (50°F) to 25°C (77°F), great for hiking and sightseeing. Hike Songshan Mountain to see red maples and golden ginkgoes. Visit Longmen Grottoes in the afternoon—sunlight makes the stone carvings look better. Chrysanthemum shows are held in October-November; ask your hotel for the latest show locations (they’re usually free or cheap).

Cultural Tour Tips (Weather & Language Help)

If you are fond of Chinese religious culture, Luoyang would be a must-see destination for you. The attractions in Luoyang are focussed on the profound religious culture. Luoyang is the birthplace of Heluo Culture, which produced the most ancient Chinese classic known as The Book of Changes.  Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism thrived here, as did the idealist school of philosophical thought. A visit to Longmen Grottoes will reward you with magnificent artworks of the Buddhist culture. Here’s how to plan based on weather and language needs:

- Summer (hot/humid): Visit indoor sites—White Horse Temple (China’s first Buddhist temple, has English guides) and Luoyang Museum (air-conditioned, English exhibits).
- Spring/autumn (mild): Explore outdoor sites—Longmen Grottoes (UNESCO site, rent an English audio guide at the entrance for ¥30) and Shaolin Temple (watch kung fu shows, schedules are in English at the gate).

Language tips for foreign visitors: Most major sites have English signs. Download translation apps like WeChat Translate (works offline). Carry a card with your hotel address in Chinese—taxi drivers may not speak English. Many hotels have English-speaking staff; ask them to write down site names in Chinese for easy communication.

Try to Avoid domestic travel seasons & Seasonal Packing Tips

Try to plan your Luoyang tour to avoid the peak holidays. Because they are popular with Chinese tourists, Luoyang attractions become more crowded in these periods. The most crowded seasons in China are Chinese Spring Festival (usually in late Jan or early Feb.), International Labor Day (May 01 to 05) and National Day (Oct 01-07). Spring Festival and the National Day golden week are the most crowded time for travelling. The Luoyang Peony Fair is always held from April to the first ten days of May; if you want to have a peony tour in Luoyang, try to arrange your holiday in this period.

  • Spring (Mar-May): Temperatures change a lot. Pack layers (long-sleeve shirts, light jackets), a scarf (for dust storms in early spring), and comfortable walking shoes (for garden visits).
  • Summer (Jun-Aug): Light and cool clothes (shorts, T-shirts), a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 50+), and a small umbrella/raincoat (for afternoon thunderstorms). Mosquito repellent is a must for mountain visits.
  • Autumn (Sep-Nov): Layers (sweaters, light coats), as evenings get cool. Comfortable hiking shoes for mountain trips.
  • Winter (Dec-Feb): Heavy warm clothes (down jackets, hats, scarves, gloves, thermal underwear). Snow boots are useful if it snows. Most hotels have heating, but carry a small portable charger—cold weather drains phone batteries fast.
