Kunming Railway Station is the intersection of Guizhou-Kunming Railway, Chengdu-Kunming Railway, Nanning-Kunming Railway, Kunming-Yuxi Railway, Kunming Railway, It is the special-grade station in Yunnan.
At early 1980s, Kunming Railway Station just operated 6 passenger trains to the direction of Beijing, Shanghai, Guiyang, Panzhihua, Zhongyi Village and Jinma Village. At that time, the railway station lacked of transport capacity and ability which limited the number of trains. The train ticket was very hard to purchase at that time.

Bus: Several bus routes (No. 2, 23, 47, 68, 83, 236) stop at the station’s north and south squares. Subway (Metro): Metro Line 1 (the most convenient option) stops directly at Kunming Railway Station. The subway connects to the North Bus Station, Kunming South Railway Station (high-speed hub), and key city areas. First train departs at 06:21, last train arrives at 23:27; peak-hour intervals are as short as 3 minutes and 50 seconds. Subway fares range from 2–8 CNY. Tickets can be purchased at vending machines (accepts cash and foreign cards) or via mobile apps. The subway station is seamlessly connected to the railway station, so you don’t need to go outside to transfer.
Taxi/Ride-Hailing: Taxis are available at the station’s north and south exits. It’s recommended to use ride-hailing apps (Didi Chuxing, with English version) for transparent pricing. A ride from the station to the city center (Wuyi Square) costs about 15–25 CNY; to Changshui Airport, it’s 80–120 CNY (40–60 minutes). In addition to Kunming Railway Station (the main old-city station), Kunming has two other key railway stations that foreign travelers may encounter, mainly serving high-speed trains:
- Kunming South Railway Station (昆明南站): Key for High-Speed Trains. Located in Chenggong District (about 15 km from the city center), it is Kunming’s largest high-speed railway hub, serving long-distance high-speed routes to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and other major cities. It also connects to the China-Laos Railway’s high-speed services. Transportation: Metro Line 1 and Line 4 connect it to Kunming Railway Station and the city center (30–40 minutes by subway). If your ticket says "Kunming South," ensure you go to the correct station (it’s far from the old city).
- Kunming West Railway Station (昆明西站): A smaller station mainly serving regional trains to western Yunnan (e.g., Chuxiong, Dali). It has fewer international traveler services compared to Kunming Railway Station and Kunming South Station. Transportation: Bus routes 80, 148, and 153 serve the station.
Important Notes for Travelers: Always check your train ticket carefully to confirm the station name (Kunming 昆明 vs. Kunmingnan 昆明南) and departure time.
