Huangshan has flights to China's major cities of Beijing, Shanghai, etc. and regular charter flights to and from Hong Kong and Macau. Its railway and highway transportation is also very convenient. During holidays, Huangshan is one of the attractions that have the maximum tourist trains. Huangshan Tunxi International Airport is the primary air gateway, situated approximately 7 kilometers from downtown Tunxi. It is a modern facility equipped with comprehensive communications and navigation systems. The airport operates scheduled flights to major Chinese hubs, ensuring connectivity for long-distance travelers.

Airport to City Transfer:

Railway: High-Speed and Conventional Networks

The rail network provides the most popular and efficient means of reaching Huangshan, with two main stations serving different needs.

1. Huangshan North Railway Station (黄山北站): This is the primary high-speed rail (HSR) station, opened in 2015. Located about 15 kilometers northwest of Tunxi, it is a modern hub connecting Huangshan to China's expansive HSR grid.

• Tourist Shuttle Buses: Official buses depart directly to Huangshan Scenic Area's South Gate (Tangkou) and North Gate (Taiping), as well as to Tunxi. This is the most straightforward option for heading straight to the mountain.
• Public Bus: Local bus routes (like Bus 21) connect the station to downtown Tunxi.
• Taxi/Ride-hailing: A taxi to Tunxi costs about 40-50 RMB (25-30 minutes); to Tangkou, it costs 150-200 RMB (50-60 minutes).

2. Huangshan Railway Station (黄山站): This is the older, conventional train station located within Tunxi District. It serves slower T/K/Z-class trains on the Anhui-Jiangxi line.

Key Destinations: Direct services to Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hefei, Jingdezhen, Nanchang, and Xiamen, among others. It is suitable for budget travelers or those coming from cities without direct HSR links.

Location Advantage: Its central location in Tunxi makes it a short, cheap taxi ride to hotels and the Old Street.

Highway: Long-Distance and Inter-City Buses

Huangshan's expressway network seamlessly integrates it with the Yangtze River Delta and surrounding provinces.

Main Expressways:

• Hui-Hang Expressway (G56): Connects Huangshan to Hangzhou (2.5-3 hours by car) and forms part of the national grid.
• Hefei-Tongling-Huangshan Expressway (G3): Provides a direct link to Anhui's capital, Hefei (2.5-3 hours).
• Ring Huangshan Expressway: A vital road that encircles the scenic region, connecting all major gates (South, North, West) and nearby attractions like Hongcun and Xidi.

Huangshan Bus Transfer Center (Tunxi Bus Station): This is the city's main long-distance and regional bus hub, located opposite the Huangshan Railway Station.

Key Routes:

• To the Scenic Area: Frequent minibuses and coaches run to Tangkou (at the foot of the South Gate), taking about 1 hour.
• To Ancient Villages: Direct buses to Hongcun, Xidi, Chengkan, and other Huizhou villages depart regularly.
• Inter-city Services: Direct long-distance coaches operate to Shanghai (4-5 hours), Hangzhou (2.5 hours), Nanjing (3 hours), Wuhan (5-6 hours), Wuyuan (2 hours), and Jingdezhen (1.5 hours).

Internal & City Traffic

1. Local Public Buses (Within Tunxi District)
Huangshan City (Tunxi) operates over a dozen public bus lines, with a standard flat fare of 1-2 RMB. They are useful for navigating within the urban area (e.g., from the bus station to Tunxi Old Street). Crucially, there are no direct public buses from downtown Tunxi to the Huangshan Scenic Area itself. To reach the mountain, one must take a regional bus or tourist shuttle from the Tunxi Bus Station or Huangshan North Station.
 

2. Taxis & Ride-Hailing Services
Taxis are plentiful and affordable for city travel.

Fare Structure: Flag-down rate is 7 RMB for the first 2.5 kilometers, then 2.5 RMB/km. A trip across downtown Tunxi rarely exceeds 15 RMB.

Special Surcharges:

• Night Surcharge (22:00-06:00): A 20% additional fee is applied to the metered fare.
• Long-Distance/Empty Return Surcharge: For trips to distant locations like the airport, HSR station, or especially the scenic area, drivers may negotiate a fixed price (as meters are often not used) or add a 50% surcharge for the empty return journey, as formally stipulated.
• Ride-Hailing: Didi Chuxing is widely used and often offers more transparent pricing for longer trips to the mountain or villages. Booking in advance is recommended for early morning departures.
   

3. Transportation to the Mountain Gates & Around the Scenic Area

From Tunxi/Tangkou to Cable Cars: Upon arriving at Tangkou (South Gate), you must take the Scenic Area's mandatory eco-bus (approx. 19 RMB) to one of the cable car stations (Yungu or Mercy Light Pavilion) or the walking trail entrance.

Between Scenic Area Gates: Eco-buses also operate between the different gates (South, North, West), useful for designing a non-return hiking route.

Private Car Charter: For families or small groups seeking maximum flexibility, hiring a private car with a driver for a day (approx. 400-600 RMB) is an excellent option to visit multiple ancient villages or to travel directly from your hotel to a cable car station.

Strategic Travel Tips

• Optimal Route: For most travelers, taking high-speed rail to Huangshan North Station, then the official tourist shuttle bus directly to Tangkou, is the most efficient combo.
• Stay Overnight in Tangkou: To catch sunrise on the mountain, stay in Tangkou the night before your ascent, as the first buses from Tunxi may not get you there in time.
• Purchase Tickets Online: Scenic area entrance tickets, cable car tickets, and eco-bus tickets can all be purchased via official WeChat accounts or platforms like Ctrip, saving queuing time.
• Baggage Storage: Both Huangshan North Station and hotels in Tangkou offer secure baggage storage, allowing you to hike the mountain unencumbered.
