Located in the prefecture of Nanping, Fujian Province, southeast of China, Mount Wuyi contains the largest and most representative example of a largely intact forest encompassing the diversity of the Chinese Subtropical Forest and the South Chinese Rainforest. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for cultural, scenic, and biodiversity values since 1999.

Mount Wuyi is a mountain range that covers a total area of 99,975 hectares. It is so large that it is divided into four core parts: the Nine-Bend Stream Ecological Protection Area with an area of 36,400 hectares in the center, flanked by and the Wuyishan National Scenic Area (7,000 hectares) to the east and the Wuyishan National Nature Reserve (56,527 hectares) to the west. When is the best time to go?

Best season: Late March to late June or mid-October to mid-November.

Spring (March-June): Lush green mountains, high humidity, and a high probability of seeing a sea of clouds. April is also a great time to witness the picking and processing of Wuyi Rock Tea, filling the valleys with its fragrant aroma.

Autumn (October-November): Cool and dry climate with excellent visibility, perfect for strenuous hiking without the risk of dehydration from the heat.

Avoidance Guidelines: Try to avoid the scorching heat of July and August (extremely intense sunshine) and Chinese national holidays (such as National Day in early October), as these periods are extremely crowded and bamboo raft tickets are very difficult to obtain.

Safety Tips

  1. Climbing the steep slopes of Tianyou Peak and Huxiao Rock is strictly prohibited in rainy weather, as the wet stone slabs are extremely slippery and prone to falls. Do not stop to take photos in the narrow sections of the "One Line Sky" (一线天) to avoid congestion.
  2. Tea picking is prohibited in the tea plantation areas to protect the local ecosystem and the interests of tea farmers.
  3. The temperature difference between day and night in the scenic area is significant. Bring a light jacket in summer and a windproof layer in spring and autumn. Replenish water frequently in small amounts to avoid heatstroke/dehydration.
  4. Do not venture into undeveloped trails, as there is a risk of getting lost and falling rocks. Travel in groups and do not hike alone.
  5. You can book the "Impression Dahongpao" live performance in advance to relax and immerse yourself in Wuyi tea culture in the evening.
