Where to Stay in Chongqing

Planning a trip to Chongqing and confused about where to stay? Don’t worry—this guide breaks down everything you need to know in simple terms, covering the best areas, accommodation picks based on attractions, transportation, and budget, plus tips for day trips to Wulong and Dazu Rock Carvings. No fancy jargon, just straight-up useful info to make your stay smooth and enjoyable.

Three Core Accommodation Areas in Chongqing

Before diving into details, you need to understand Chongqing’s “three-center” layout. Experienced travelers usually divide the main urban tourist areas into three parts: Yuzhong District, Jiangbei District, and Nan’an District.

Yuzhong District: Yuzhong is considered the "heart" of Chongqing, it’s the first choice for most visitors. This district is home to famous landmarks such as Jiefangbei, Hongya Cave, and the Yangtze River Cableway. It’s a lively area with plenty of shopping malls, restaurants, and night-time attractions. However, its popularity means that the prices are generally higher, and the area can get crowded. If you’re looking for convenience and proximity to the major attractions, Yuzhong is ideal.

Jiangbei District: Jiangbei, with Guanyinqiao at its center, is a popular area among locals, especially young people. The district is full of modern shopping malls, street food, and vibrant nightlife. Prices in Jiangbei are typically more affordable compared to Yuzhong, making it an attractive option for tourists. It’s also well connected to Yuzhong by public transport, so visiting the city’s main attractions is easy.

Nan’an District: Located along Nanbin Road, Nanan District offers a quieter and more relaxed environment compared to the hustle and bustle of the city center. This area is ideal for travelers who seek a peaceful retreat with stunning views of the Yuzhong skyline. It’s a fantastic spot for romance, art, and a slower pace of life. Hotels here often feature river views, providing a perfect backdrop for a more serene stay.

Where to Stay Based on Attractions

If your main goal is to visit specific spots, staying nearby will save you tons of time. Here are the best areas for popular attractions:

Jiefangbei & Hongya Cave Area

Best for: First-time visitors, night owls, shoppers, and photography enthusiasts.

Jiefangbei and Hongya Cave are in the heart of Yuzhong District, it’s easy to access top attractions like the Yangtze River Cableway and Hongya Cave. You’ll find that everything you need is within walking distance, including restaurants, shops, and nightlife. Plus, this area has great views, especially at night when the city lights up. However, as a popular area, accommodation here tends to be more expensive, and smaller theme hotels in high-rise buildings may not offer the same level of service as large, established hotel chains.

It's only a bridge away from the bustling Jiefangbei area, yet the hotels here are quieter. Where to Stay Based on Transportation Convenience

Chongqing's terrain is complex, with many hills, so public transport—especially the metro—can be the most efficient way to get around. The city’s metro system covers most major tourist attractions, so choosing a hotel close to a metro station will save you time and effort.

Top Choice: Along Light Rail Line 2 & Line 1

Chongqing’s light rail isn’t just a means of transportation—it’s also a tourist attraction itself. Especially Line 2, which runs along the river and passes the famous “Liziba Light Rail Through Building” spot.

Core Hub: Xiaoshizi Station: A transfer station for Line 1 and Line 6. Staying within a 10-minute walk of this station means you can reach Ciqikou directly via Line 1 without transferring, or get to Jiangbei Grand Theatre quickly via Line 6.

Secondary Hub: Lianglukou Station: A transfer station for Line 1 and Line 3, and a stop on the Airport Express Line 3. The Chongqing Hilton Hotel is nearby—perfect for travelers with luggage who need to transfer frequently, as it’s convenient and quiet.

Convenient Transfer for Airports/High-Speed Trains

If you arrive on a late flight or need to catch an early high-speed train the next day, you don’t have to squeeze into Jiefangbei.

- Near Jiangbei Airport: Although it’s a 40-minute drive from the urban area, some hotels offer free airport shuttles, and prices are only half of those in the city for the same level of hotel. It’s ideal as the first or last stop of your trip.

- Near Chongqing North Railway Station: Most day trips to Wulong and Dazu Rock Carvings start from here. Staying nearby makes it easy to get up early for group tours or trains.

Budget-Based Accommodation Options

Best Areas for Wulong Karst or Dazu Rock Carvings

Chongqing has two popular attractions outside the urban area: Wulong Karst Tourist Area and Dazu Rock Carvings. You can choose a day trip or stay locally—here’s what you need to know:

Wulong Karst Tourist Area

For Wulong’s karst landforms (such as Tian Sheng San Qiao and Xiannü Mountain), we strongly recommend staying one night in Wulong instead of returning to downtown Chongqing. The one-way trip from downtown takes 3-4 hours, which will greatly reduce your sightseeing time and leave you exhausted.

The best place to stay is Xiannü Mountain Town (near the tourist center). Hotels here are concentrated, dining is convenient, and it’s closest to the entrance of the core scenic areas. Many hotels also offer free shuttle services.

Recommended Hotel: Wulong Tianyi Fangcaodi Resort Hotel – Located on Ginkgo Avenue, Xiannü Mountain Street, it combines natural scenery with Spanish style, featuring advanced facilities and perfect for a relaxing vacation.

Dazu Rock Carvings

Since it’s closer to downtown Chongqing (about 1.5 hours by high-speed train, 2 hours by car), you can choose flexibly based on your itinerary: if you want a relaxed trip, you can make a day trip and stay in downtown Chongqing (e.g., near Jiefangbei or Shapingba High-Speed Railway Station).

However, if you want to visit both Baoding Mountain and Beishan Rock Carvings in depth, or experience Dazu’s nightlife, staying in Dazu urban area is a better choice. We recommend staying in the center of Dazu urban area or near Baoding Mountain Scenic Area for an early visit the next day.

Recommended Hotels: Featured hotels in Dazu Haitang Xiangguo Historical and Cultural Scenic Area, or local high-star hotels like Dazu Huadi Dynasty Hotel. They have complete facilities and will let you rest fully after visiting the profound historical sites.
