Zhoushan, a unique port and tourist city of China, lies at the southern flank of Yangtze River estuary and outer edge of Hangzhou Bay. It is regarded as “Buddhist Paradise on the Sea"; also it is well known fo its fishery.

Zhoushan Islands is said to be the largest islands along China's coastline, covering a total area of 22,000 km², of which an area of 20,800 km² is sea. It features in fascinating islands landscapes. It is a group of over 400 islands off the northern coast of Zhejiang province. Among those islands, Zhoushan Island is the largest one, and it is the fourth largest island of China.

These islands were initially brought under regular Chinese administration in the 8th century, after which they were administered from Shanghai on the mainland. The significance of these islands were that they provided excellent harbours for the flourishing trade linking Japan, the Ryukyu Islands, and the Zhejiang ports of Ningbo as well as Hangzhou.

Zhujiajian Scenic Area

Zhujiajian Island has developed the International Sand Sculpture Art Square(Nansha Scenic Area), Wushitang Scenic Area, Baishan Scenic Area, Dongshawan Beach, Daqingshan National Park and other scenic spots, combining natural scenery with Guanyin culture.

Nansha Scenic Area is the hometown of sand sculptures and has a huge group of sand sculptures. Boasting continuous soft sands and delicate waves, the sand sculptures in Nansha Square is lifelike. At Nansha Scenic Area, you can get close to the sunshine, waves, beaches, rocks, cliffs, fishing villages, etc.

Dongsha is the best place to enjoy the sunrise at the Zhoushan Islands.

Wushitang Scenic Area is a beach covered with black cobbles. At the Wushitang Scenic Area, you can enjoy the scenery of the Wushitang Beach and the surroundings fishing villages. 
 

Putuoshan

Putuo Mountain is located in the east of the Zhoushan Islands. Mount Putuo, together with Mount Wutai in Shanxi, Mount Emei in Sichuan and Mount Jiuhua in Anhui, is also known as the four famous Buddhist mountains in China. Putuo Mountain is one of the 1,390 islands in Zhoushan Islands. It looks like black dragon lying in the sea, covering an area of nearly 13 square kilometers. It is known as the "Buddha Country in the Sea" and the "Holy Land in the South China Sea". There is a huge statue of Guanyin at the Putuo Mountain, which is the landmark if Putuo Mountain.

You should not miss the Puji Temple, Fayu Temple and Huiji Temple, as well as the 33-meter-high statue of Guanyin in the South China Sea. You can enjoy the pleasant scenery of mountains and seas at Putuo Mountain. Putuo island is located in the east of Zhoushan Islands, and there is no road with the outside world, so it can only take a boat to the Putuo Mountain Pier.

The distance between the scenic spots on the Putuo Mountain varies from 2 to 10 kilometers. The scenic spots that are close to each other can be visited on foot, and those that are far away can take the tourist bus on the island in the passenger station next to the pier.
 

Dongji Island

Dongji Island is located in the Dongji County, Putuo District, Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province. Dongji Island is composed of several islands including Miaozihu Island, Qingbang Island, Dongfushan Island and Huangxing Island. The best time to visit Dongji Island is May to October.

At the Miaozihu Island, you can enjoy the wonderful scenery of the island, sea and the houses here. At the Dongfushan Island, you can enjoy the sunrise. And people also hike around the Dongfushan Island, which is about 8.25 kilometers in total.


 

Things to Do and See

These islands are steep and rugged, and a few of them rise to elevations 800 feet and even more above sea level. The highest peak of these islands and the largest island of the group, rises to 1,640 feet.

The islands lie at the entrance to Hangzhou Bay, also receive much of the silt load discharged from the mouth of the Yangtze River to the north; and a lot of these islands are surrounded by mud banks. As time passed by, a few of these islands have become attached to the mainland.

The islands continues to be one of the most significant Chinese fishing grounds; also, it is home to an enormous fishing fleet. The islands produce lots of fish for market as well as the marine products like kelp, other seaweeds and algae. 


 

Best Time to Visit Zhoushan Islands

The best time to visit the Zhoushan Islands is spring and autumn with pleasant weather and less crowds. In spring, you can enjoy the wonderful costal landscapes at Zhoushan Islands. In autumn, the weather is cool, which is suitable for outdoor activities. And the seafood at Zhoushan Islands is most delicious in autumn. If you prefer to visit Zhoushan Islands in summer, it may be a bit crowded in Zhoushan Islands in summer, while it is also good time to experience the island scenery. If you prefer silent atmosphere, you can visit Zhoushan Islands in winter, while the weather is cold and windy.
 

How to Get to Zhoushan Islands

By plane

Since Zhoushan Islands are islands on the sea, where you can reach by boat. There is an airport at Putuo Mountain, which is located in the Zhujiajian Island. After arriving at the Putuoshan Airport, you can take the boat to the island like Putuo Mountain.
 

By High-speed Train

You can also take high-speed train to Ningbo, then take bus or taxi to Zhoushan.
