Ancient town near Xining
Huangyuan Dan Gar City (Chinese name: 丹噶尔古城) in Qinghai is praised as “the business city in tea route”. “Dan Gar” means white conch in Mongolian. It is situated in the north bank of the Yellow River and the beginning of Huang Water. It is 40 miles away from Xining city. Huangyuan Dan Gar City is a place which integrates the Loess Plateau with Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and it contains farming culture and prairie culture.
Dan Gar City established in the year of Hongwu Period of Ming dynasty, and it is 600 years now. Since West Han Dynasty, here was becoming an important town gradually with cultural mix of business, religion, military and custom. Tang dynasty and Tibetan regime in ancient China set up the first “Tea-horse trade market” in Riyue Mountain and opened up the way of Tang-Tibet Ancient Road. Dan Gar City in Song dynasty is communication hub of the south side of the Silk Road and it became the biggest distributing center in the northwestern region in Ming and Qing dynasty. At that time, businessmen and craftsmen from Beijing and Tianjin came here in flocks; businessmen from British, America and Russia came here to run banks and traded with Chinese people in Dan Gar City. At the same time, a team of “Tibetan businessmen” which specialize in minority trade had taken shape. Dan Gar City has a length of 6 meters, the main street inside is less than one thousand meter which connects building group like Chenghuang Temple, Wen temple and Dan Gar Office, and it displays cultural process of Huangyuan’s development and cultural character.
With the development of time and the transfer of commercial center, Dan Gar City is not so bustling as ever before. Therefore, in order to create a distinctive scene and extend the cultural memory of this ancient city, Huangyuan County starts to make some protective restoration of Dan Gar Ancient city.
Gonghai Gate
Gonghai Gate is the west gate of the Dan Gar Ancient City, which shows our respects to the god of the Qinghai Lake.
City God Temple
The City God Temple, also known as Town God’s Temple, has a history about 200 years. It is the best-preserved City God Temple in Qinghai Province, which is also the westernmost City God Temple in China. There is no city god temple after passing the Sun Moon Mountain. Huangyuan County Museum is established in 1983, which is known as the bronzes excavated here. The bronze is said to be the representative of the Queen Mother of the West.
Ren Kee Firm
Ren Kee Firm is a European-style architecture with Roman columns and dome windows. The trading and business has a long history in the Dan Gar Ancient City. In the Qing Dynasty, the market-oriented economy was prosperous, which attracted many foreign merchants to trade here.
At Ren Kee Firm, you can see the currency circulating in various countries at that time and the scenes of trade activities.
Danggar Administrative Department
Danggar Administrative Department was established in 1829 AD. Covering an area of 5,500 square meters, it was a county-level political system established in the border area in Qing Dynasty. In 1913 AD, its name was changed to Huangyuan County. Here you can see the performance of the court trail in yamen, which artisticly reproduces the administrative office scene at that time.
Confucius Temple
Confucius Temple was built in 1918-1920, which has a history over 100 years. And this Confucius Temple is the westernmost Confucius Temple in China.
Zhenhai Xieying Fu

Huozu Pavilion
Covering an area of 202 square meters, the main body of the Huozu Pavilion is 14 meters tall. Huozu Pavilion has a history over 200 years. It is a landmark of Dan Gar Ancient City.
